Driveways in Clavering

Clavering is a residential estate on the northern edge of Hartlepool, off Easington Road and close to Hart Station and the coast. Its closes and groves of semis and detached homes mostly have drives already, often single-width.

Quick answer

In Clavering the usual job is widening a single drive or replacing an old surface rather than starting from scratch. There is no conservation area, so a permeable drive or one draining to the garden needs no planning permission for a house. Wider kerbs need Hartlepool's £145 permit. Expect about £60 to £120 per m².

Golf courses and Cornish towns on the street signs

Clavering's street names come in themes. One set takes its names from famous golf courses: Turnberry Grove, Carnoustie Grove, Gleneagles Road, Muirfield Close, Birkdale Close, Formby Close, Wentworth Grove and Sandwich Grove. Another follows the West Country, with Tintagel Close, Totnes Close, Tavistock Close and Torcross Close. St Mark's Church, the Gillens Arms and Clavering Primary School are close to the centre, and Hartlepool Golf Club is under a mile away.

Clavering lies in the Hart ward, which had 3,226 households at the 2021 Census and is 76% owner-occupied, with 45% of households running two or more vehicles. The census area around Clavering Road and Templeton Close (LSOA Hartlepool 001B) is more uniform. Of its 603 households, 66% lived in semi-detached houses, 17% in terraces, 11% in detached homes and 7% in flats. 85% were owner-occupied, only 4% socially rented, and 37% had two or more cars or vans.

Typical Clavering projects:

  • Widening a single drive beside a semi to take two cars side by side.
  • Replacing original concrete or tarmac that has cracked, sunk at the edges or faded.
  • Block paving or imprinted concrete to tidy the whole front garden.
  • A drive to the side of a house where a corner plot gives room for a garage or caravan.

Till over limestone

The British Geological Survey maps central Clavering on glacial till over the Seaham Formation, a Permian dolomitic limestone. The till is a dense, stony clay, firm to build on but slow to drain, and the limestone is too deep to affect a drive.

Good practice for a Clavering drive:

  • dig out to firm clay and lay a geotextile membrane,
  • build a compacted crushed-stone sub-base, at least 150mm for blocks or tarmac,
  • set a fall of about 1 in 60 away from the house,
  • send water to a border, a soakaway or a permeable surface.

The Environment Agency's flood map shows no mapped flood zone within 300 metres of the estate centre. Surface water from roofs and paving is still the main thing to manage.

Rules, permits and covenants

Planning. There is no conservation area in or near Clavering, and the only listed structure nearby is a tunnel under the old railway embankment. For a house, a permeable new drive or one draining to the lawn is permitted development. Impermeable surfaces of more than five square metres draining to the road need planning permission.

Covenants. Newer estates sometimes have deeds that restrict changes to open-plan front gardens. Check yours before removing a lawn that runs into a neighbour's.

Kerb crossings. If widening means a wider crossing, your accredited contractor applies for Hartlepool Borough Council's £145 vehicle crossing permit, paid in advance. The council checks the site and normally issues it within about two working days. A standard crossing is 2.7 metres wide. More on our dropped kerbs page.

Widening costs in Clavering

Widening a single drive to a double usually adds 12 to 20m². Many owners resurface the whole frontage at once, typically 30 to 35m². Checkatrade's April 2026 UK averages for a 32m² frontage:

Surface Per m² 32m²
Gravel with a grid about £60 roughly £1,920
Tarmac about £90 roughly £2,880
Block paving about £100 roughly £3,200
Resin bound about £120 roughly £3,840

Breaking out an old surface, new edging and a wider kerb add to the cost. Imprinted concrete is common on Clavering's closes, and we can price it alongside the surfaces above.

Choosing between them. On a semi where the drive runs right up to the front door, block paving is easy to lift and relay if a drain or cable needs work later. Resin gives a smooth, seamless finish that suits a modern porch, but it must go on a sound base. Tarmac is the most hard-wearing for the price if you park a van or a caravan. Gravel is cheapest but drifts onto the pavement on a sloping close unless it sits in a grid.

Questions people ask in Clavering

Can I widen my Clavering drive onto the lawn?

Usually yes, without planning permission, if the new section is permeable or drains to the garden. Check your deeds for covenants on open-plan front gardens.

Do I need a wider dropped kerb?

If the car would cross the footway beyond the existing crossing, yes. Your contractor applies for Hartlepool's £145 permit, and the council checks the site first.

Why has my Clavering drive sunk at the edges?

Edges sink when they were not set in concrete or the sub-base was thin over clay. Relaying with proper edge restraints and a deeper base fixes it.

Is Clavering at risk of flooding?

There is no mapped flood zone within 300 metres of the estate centre. Manage roof and surface water by draining the drive onto your own land.
